I agree. The ability to take information and knowledge, make connections and then apply that knowledge in a creative and innovative way requires a natural curiosity and inquiry skills.

The ability to engage and develop rapport with others will be instrumental to our boys success. The projection of self-confidence, personal presence, manners, etiquette, and non-verbal communications will increase the chances our boys are heard and understood. To be able to articulate and present one's opinion and vision, negotiate, influence, manage etc. will increase the likelihood our boys will be heard and understood.

I agree with Marianne. The importance of individualized education has been addressed in many intriguing TED talks. Nurturing the individual learner is critical to developing the self-awareness, resilience, leadership etc. that the school is trying to develop. In the end, I believe the most important thing we can do for our boys is help make them the best version of themselves. The branding of education, tag lines and labelling of a Crescent boy as a certain type of man or graduate is not appealing to me and, in my opinion, does not serve the boys well.

Critical thinking is grounded in foundational knowledge and the ability to deconstruct and understand information. Our boys can access information and acquire knowledge easily but we must ensure deep understanding. Investments in foundational learning are critical.

Failure and overcoming failure should be viewed as a healthy part of learning. Our boys need to learn to accept failure and setbacks and actively make plans to address them. Boys with learning differences and other challenges who demonstrate resilience daily have a lot to teach our boys. Including and supporting a diverse group of learners within classrooms promotes the development of the skills, qualities and character being contemplated in the portrait of a graduate. Reflection on the admissions process, the use of standardized testing, allocation of resources to academic support and the individual learner is needed. What behaviours and outcomes are we going to reward? Do the best students and learners have the best grades? Grades, while important, are only one measure of success.

Entrepreneurship is a key driver of our economy and our boys should be aware of entrepreneurial career options. To harness your knowledge and passion to identify opportunities to maximize economic, social and personal success requires the character and grit and resilience we speak of. It may be that our boys will achieve professional and personal success in a much less traditional or conventional way than we did. In my opinion, this should be investigated further.
