“I know that entrepreneurship is a career option for me.”

Young people cannot become entrepreneurs unless they know that entrepreneurship is an option for them and understand what it entails. An entrepreneurial mindset combines creativity, innovativeness, willingness to take (acceptable) risks, perception of failure as an opportunity to learn and persevere, and willingness to work outside one’s comfort zone. (See Roundtable Backgrounder for full details.)

Share your thoughts! For example, your response could refer to general awareness of entrepreneurship, Canadian culture, community reception to entrepreneurship, or our society’s perception of failure.

Submit a challenge that isn’t already listed, comment on an existing idea and vote for the challenge(s) you believe are the most important to overcome.

  1. People's perceptions.

People's perceptions to teenagers, young students and young adults have been negative because people think young people tend to be lazy and unwilling and not serious about work. However, not all young people are like that. Many of us actually want to make a difference. Nevertheless, young entrepreneurs still encounter obstacles when pitching our ideas to experienced investors or entrepreneurs.

  2. I am an entrepreneur, and I better not forget that.

For young entrepreneurs, there is a natural instinct to strive for better, to drive forward and defy odds; to build; to create. But the emotional "roller-coaster" of successes and failures are not something that can be easily communicated. So most young entrepreneurs are lonely in their struggle to understand their own qualities and what makes them tick. I followed my instinct - blindly at times, skinning my knees, creating havoc and restoring order. Every mistake was worth it. And the mistakes I have yet to make will be worth it as well, as I learn lessons in years to come.…

  5. Entrepeneurship should be recognized as a profession unto its own similar to other professions such as doctors, lawyers, engineers etc.

Entrepeneurship is not viewed as a profession unto its own. As a result:
    1. Society in general has no clear idea as to the true risks and benefits of this profession and, accordingly young people, when considering a career, often have no idea that this might be a viable path for them.
    2. There is little, if any, educational and/or support infrastructure re becoming and remaining an entrepreneur. The other professions (including trades) have clear educational paths and professional organizations which proved significant structure and guidance for those who wish to choose them as careers. Unfortunately those comparatively few who…

  6. Overcoming an early experience with failure

My first serious entrepreneurial venture failed - a software program my friend and I created for a market that didn't exist. If I didn't have positive feedback and support from my family at the time, I might not have gained the confidence to pursue another idea. I later learned that this experience with failure, and what I learned from it, was actually as important to investors than successes I might have also had. I've attached a picture of one of my favourite quotes that illustrates this.

    For young entrepreneurs, there…
