Future Friendly Schools - Global Citizenship

What makes a Future Friendly School? Through this participatory process, you will help to identify and prioritize the most relevant indicators for certification across our three focus areas of environmental stewardship, student voice, and global citizenship. We appreciate your participation and look forward to your insights! This page is for voting, commenting on, and suggesting new indicators in the area of global citizenship.   1. Long term relationship with other schools, for the purposes of curriculum collaboration, student exchange, service learning, etc.

    Global schools should strive to cultivate "sister school" relationships with 3-4 other schools in the world. These schools become like family, allowing deep curricular collaboration, student exchanges, service learning trips, etc. It's best if there are a variety of different types of global schools (rural vs. urban, developing countries vs. developed, Spanish vs. French vs. Swahili vs. Mandarin, etc.)

  4. Change the world from just your classroom

    Microvolunteering can be described as easy, no commitment actions that benefit worthy causes and which can be conducted in under 30 minutes, on the go, on demand and on a person’s own terms. These type of actions can be included within a citizenship course, where students can learn about and participate in actual volunteering activities within a class lesson without actually leaving the classroom! You can’t do that with traditional volunteering activities. So basically, Future Friendly Schools could incorporate microvolunteering actions within a Citizenship course to enable students to actually change the world in real time in a class lesson…

  5. Children from poor families should not be isolated from those in rich families and have opportunities to access IT equipment like computers

    In kenya,i have seen this big problom.where kids cannot access IT eqiupments like computer.and are not given opportunity to choose their carreer path

  6. Allow students to develop as worldwide citizens of Earth

    Schools and colleges should offer courses and classes that allow students to gain a better understanding of themselves in the world. This would include - language classes of global languages not just the "traditional" languages - they could learn languages such as Arabic, Mandarin, Swahili, Hindi etc.
    World politics and development could be included so that students understand political systems in the world and what people's lives are like in other countries.
    Learn about their own rights and help them to recognise where there and other people's rights are being eroded and what they can do to try and stop…

  7. Environmental Sustainability and Fostering a Connection to the Environment

    Future friendly schools should operate as environmentally-friendly places of discovery. Schools should follow the three "R"s as strictly as possible-- reduce, reuse, and recycle.
    Students should be encouraged to form a close relationship with their natural environment. This provides young people with a sense of purpose, place, and stability, and helps them understand why it is so important to care for nature. Connections with nature have also been shown to increase mental health and improve performance in school.
    Environmental education should also be included in the curriculum so that students can properly understand the issues facing our world.

  9. Creation of global online and offline education materials for rural poor communities

    Basic reading and writing skills is the key to every education, no matter the class or age group, this should be accessible and affordable to all. To globalize education this is the basic concept that must be adopted by both government and non-government institutions, to brake the chain of poverty resource and materials must be provided for this basic skills to be acquired, especially in rural poor communities.
    Literacy is not a luxury, illiteracy is a sickness

  10. Engaging students in activities that enhance their 21st centuryskills

    Students of today are technology driven and schools ought to engage them with skills of global competence. At Gayaza High School Uganda girls are exposed to many skills raging from digital content development, visual content development, collaboration projects with students outside Uganda entrepreneurship skills etc.

  12. 3E's Sustainable Schools: Environment, Economy, Equity

    Future friendly schools should be designed, constructed and administered according to the 3E's of Sustainability on the international level; protecting environments, preserving economy and promoting equity. These 3 indicators are sufficient to make future schools friendly on the local, regional and international levels. Global Citizenship is achieved through successful Local Leadership.

  14. No discrimination based on religion, tribe, *** or social background

    Some schools that are in certai regions, or based on particular religious beliefs tend to disciminate those people that dont belong to them. This should be rectified in an ideal future school

  20. International community service clubs for students, inspired to use their knowledge, innovation ideas and desire to make better changes.

    It can be volunteer clubs of engineer and science students, who will focus for examle on using their skills for helping find solution on water issues in Somalia, India and Pakistan.
